I'm just curious. I mean, the lottery is the ultimate pyramid scheme. Millions pay maybe a dollar each and the jackpot is maybe 100 million out of the 500 million paid in that day. What would happen if no one played one that one day of the year?

Nobody would win and every lottery would use heavier promotions for their next drawing.

Assuming that the players didn't make this up by betting extra on another day, the average lottery take (amount bet minus payouts) would decrease by about 0.2740% in a 365 day year, 0.2732% in a 366 day year. Profits would drop by more since there are fixed expenses that would still have to be paid.

The people that run the lottery would go into a panic, that's messing with their income. They would have more advertisements than you could stand.

then all civilization would collapse! duh! =]

the money would just go for the next lottery drawing, bringing the demand up again, so more people would buy tickets and the cycle would go on and on...
