Well, this is a mental thing. Happens to a lot of people. Basically, all I can say to you is that Tornado's have a VERY low chance at actually hitting you, not to mention if one is nearby, it's usual destruction range is about the width of a 4 lane road, making it very unlikely it will hit you.
That being said, you'll have to train yourself to overcome your fear. One of the things I used to do as a kid to overcome the fear was during a storm I would go outside and watch storms, and wait for lightning and watch it. Eventually, as I got older, I loved storms, and thought they were cool. Really, there is no foolproof way to deal with it.
Try a couple of things:
-Watch the storms, sit outside on a porch or in a garage and just watch them, wait for lightning, have fun with it.
-When a storm comes, turn on some loud music and get in a room with no windows or some blinds, close the blinds and listen to music... out of sight out of mind...
-This one may seem insensitive, but it is a genuine suggestion. If you are that worried about scaring your kids, suck it up and hide it. You may be scared out of your mind, but grit your teeth and bear it. You have to decide which is more important, being scared, or worrying about your kids.
Good luck.

Here are a few suggestions that might help. If you are worried about a tornado or any bad storm in general then figure out an action plan before a storm hits that you can put in place. For example if a bad storm hits and the phones go out have a cell phone to call people, if there is a tornado make the plan with your family to go to the basement and get away from windows, also have a first aid kit and the numbers (aside from 911) to your local hospital and fire and rescue departments, this way if there is an emergency situation and the emergency lines are jammed you can still call for help.
Another way to help feel more comfortable when a storm hits is try to meditate and make sure that breathe deeply and remember to stay calm. Maybe get a recording of a rain or thunder storm and listen to it in a place where you feel safe and eventually you will convince yourself to stay calm in a storm. You can do it, Good luck!

The next time a storm comes through, ask your husband to sit with you, either in bed or on the couch, somewhere you normally feel safe, and just ask him to hold you. After a couple of times of this, of him just being there to reassure you, you should start to feel better. If you live in an area prone to tornadoes or hurricanes, have an emergency plan set up for when one hits. Make sure everyone in the family knows and has practiced the plan and you should feel a lot better. It helps to feel like you have some control over the situation.
Good luck, and bravo for admitting your phobia!

Hey just because you are 21, DOESN'T mean that you can't be afraid of storms. Maybe try drinking hot milk right before bed during the storm. Hey, you could also try cuddling with your husband. Personally I'm scared of storms too but i just cuddle up with my boyfriend and then i feel better. You could also try to focus on your breathing, you know, so that your not breathing too fast. Well thats about all I have. I hope you do okay during the next storm.
Good luck!!
P.S.> You could also try watching your husbands and your favorite t.v. show, If the power doesn't go out.

I used to be afraid of storms too. I have learned that the best way to overcome a fear, is to learn as much as you can about it. Once I started learning about weather, it didn't seem so sry. Now, everytime there is a storm coming, I turn on the weather channel and watch. It makes me feel better to know what's coming and what to expect. Now I am not that afraid of storms. The only thing I'm still afraid of is lightning.

It's not an irrational fear. I'm scared of spiders...I don't care if they are as big as a dinner plate or as small as a pinhead.
Counseling or hypnosis might help. We all have something we are afraid of. Don't sweat it.
