I want a small dog (I live in a apartment). I just wanna know what people's experiences are. My boyfriend has a 7 yr old daughter who visits like once a month. Also, I work 8 hour days. My boyfriend wants me to get a cat but I'm more of a dog person. Also, the dog breed should be easy to train and doesn't shed much. I'm thinking a boston terrier. Also, gets along with other dogs. My parents have a spoiled lab named Buddy and I love him to death. (my mom already said I can't have him, lol.)

I have depression and my experience has been that playing with a pet has been good for me. I just prefer a dog because cats don't do anything.

Bichon Frises, Papillons, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Brussels Griffons, etc are all great apartment dogs... like ALL dogs, they will still need exercise and potty breaks, so if you work all day, you'll want to arrange to come home for lunch to let your pooch out or have someone else swing by. It is simply unfair to expect a little one to hold it all day. Some alternatives would be adopting an adult dog that already has full control of its bladder and bowels, or training your pup to a litter box. Pugs and Bostons are also fabulous, but they do shed... quite a bit. Remember - size isn't everything... many small dogs require a great deal of exercise and attention and would not be good for an apartment... they'd destroy it while you're gone!
Its good that your researching first.... too many people pick a puppy out because it's cute without finding out if it's breed is a good match for them... then later they blame the dog when it doesn't work out. Find the best breed for you and you two will be a match made in heaven.... http://www.akc.org/breeds/complete_breed_list.cfm

you cant have a dog if no one is going to be there to walk the dog at least 4 times a day . you cant make a dog stay inside all day while your at work and not except to see it had to go in the apartment.
i have a dog and a cat but i pay a woman to come and walk the dog and tend to the cat when i am not home . if you are prepared to do that OK . then get a dog. you must be sure not to get a small yap dog. you should get an Irish wolfhound that is a great dog for an apartment if you are prepared to walk the dog and let him have runs. also no sane person would think of robbing you .

Have you thought of a purebred cat? My friend has two orientals and I swear they are like dogs. They even play fetch...crazy but true.

Here are some sites I saw about dogs. Chihauhaus are cute but not always children friendly, as with most small dogs raised mainly by adults. They can bark alot, but a water pistol humanely controls that. The idea about the puppy pad is essential for the smaller breeds. It would be ridiculous to expect the bladder the size of a pea to be able to be held all day. They are extremely easy to train to the pads.

Almost all little dogs can live wonderfully in an apartment. A mini schnauzer is good and don't shed but they often bark alot. I think your choice of a Boston terrier is good they don't bark much or try a pug they are wonderful playful dogs!!
Good luck finding the right puppy!

Big dogs arent good for apartments because they need to run, and rip around, but if you want a good lazy dog put still plays then you should get a minature (not sure how to spell this) shnauzer because my parents had one and she was just adorable and played and slept most of the time, but if you dont like those then i would suggest getting a cat.

Happy animal finding!

Best dogs for apartment owners are of course the toy breeds. Being small and all, their demand for space and exercise are limited only to what they can really consume.

But also be open for options. Not everyone wants a small dog. I can't imagine myself taking care of a small dog eaither. A hound may also be an option as they love to cuddle with you during bedtime and are lazy creatures if not during playtime.

i have 3 chihuahuas in an apartment and they have lots of room to romp and play. Only prob with a chi is that they do bark, it is in their nature. Also, very easy if i have to go away for a day, just put down puppy training pads in the bathroom for them to do their business on. I would suggest these daily, as chihuahua's have little bladders and can not hold it all day.

If you're going to hold a puppy in an condo i endorse going for walks it for half-hour or extra on a daily basis alternatively of going for walks it for say 10 mins an afternoon when you have been dwelling in a residence. I endorse a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are wonderful puppies, I could understand on account that I have 2. They are very quiet puppies and really very dependable. They dont devour plenty as a greater puppy could. I particularly endorse getting a Cavalier!!!!!

Stick with the cat, unless you live on the ground floor apartment and can get the dog outside easily. Otherwise it's alot of work getting them down and outside when they need out.

Any little dog would work just fine, I have a chihuahua/terrier mix and I have not had any problems with her (other than occasional accidents)
