Pony tail won't give you split ends. They come when you over expose your hair in the sun for a prolonged period of time. Also harsh chemicals or overuse of hair dryers, curling irons, etc. will damage your hair. Never brush you hair when its wet, use a comb for wet hair! Wait until is completly dry before making your ponytail.

If you wear your hair pulled back in a French Twist or ponytail, give your hair a break once in awhile by letting it hang freely. Those styles put a lot of pressure on the hair, especially at the front hairline. Also, don’t use any uncoated elastic bands in your hair! Elastic grabs at the shaft and will break it.
Drink plenty of water to keep you hair hydrated, plus the minerals it contains will help to nourish your hair. Also eat healthy foods that include plenty of calcium and protein.
Another alternative to the pony tail is to put your hair in a bun, or an up-do for the hot summer. Take a look to this link :

No, split ends are not caused by pulling hair up. Ponytails are safe as long as done correctly. Never ever put hair up wet or use non-coated rubber bands, this is break your hair, even if your careful putting it up. If you use a regular rubberband and leave it up all day the constant movement will get caught in the band causing it to split. Also watch it when you take it down and see if any hair comes out with the ponytail holder, if so then you know you broke it.

Wearing your hair in a tight pony tail all the time can be very damaging to your hair.

When you pull your hair back wet is the worst, your hair stretches 75-80% when wet. As the hair starts to dry and shrink to the normal length the hair cant do so freely so it starts breaking off.

If you pull your hair back and run your hand across the top from the crown to the front, do you have lots of little peices, baby hairs. These are from pulling it back to much and too tight. Try avoiding ponytails, if you cant then you should try other methods of pulling your hair up; clips, head bands and such.

Eventually pulling your hair back tight in pony tails can lead to a receading hairline. where the hair breaks off so many times it eventually gives up ong growing and dies. If your hair line looks as if it is moving further back your head; Stop wearing your hair in a ponytail!! Hope this helped.

It depends on the holder you are using. It's not split ends but broken hair that it causes.

If you just can't part with the ponytail these things will help:

Never put your hair up wet. When it's wet it stretches and makes it more susceptible to breaking.

Use a coated holder with no metal and no exposed rubber.

Try alternates like "clippies" barrettes or a cute headband.

i have read that putting your hair in a pony tail every day can cause baldness because of the pressure of the hair. It usually hurts when i let my hair free (because i usually keep it all day long) . So, you know what they say... "Don't exagerate!..."

No neccesarily spilt ends.. But depending on the pontytail holder and how tight you are pulling your hair back, and will cause your hair to break where the holder is... Therefore it looks like split ends, but it's just breakage

The tie you use can break your hair, but as for split ends, don't think so.

Not if you're gentle. What it will do is cause that permanent ripple in your hair so if you do try to leave it down it has a long in the front-short in the back wave. Drives me crazy
