I was wondering if the attire was casual, very casual or what was the average dress attire for events of graduation. Also, what is the best way to get around if you don't rent a car? Any other helpful information about the 4 days of graduation would be appreciated. I am flying out with my son for his girlfriends graduation from basic training.

Contrary to the first post, I wouldn't say that it's very formal at all. While it is very common to see women in summery dresses or skirts (especially visiting wives and girlfriends haha), most people dress rather casually and wear jeans. You will not be overdressed if you opt for slacks but honestly, I wouldn't say you should really dress up. When I graduated Basic, my then-boyfriend wore his uniform to my graduation (lost of military and former military do this) but he wore jeans and a t-shirt for everything else. Also, I am stationed on Lackland, so I get to see every week what everyone is wearing and it's still the same. :) The reason I don't suggest dressing formally is that you will be walking around a lot, so you will want to wear comfortable shoes.

If you don't rent a car, you will be walking. I have never heard of any base transportation at all for anyone on Lackland, let alone for the trainees and their families. Your son's girlfriend will be used to walking as she has done nothing but for the past 6 weeks... but if you rent a car, she will love you! Personally, it was so great to be in a car (even a rental) with A/C and a radio! Plus to not have to walk!!! The base is pretty big so expect to do quite a bit of traveling if you intend on leaving the BMT area.

She should be getting base liberty (free to "roam" the base) for several days and then should have a base pass (unless she gets in trouble and has it taken away) all day Saturday. With no rental, there's not a whole lot you can do... I've lived in San Antonio since 1999 and have never had a positive experience with the public transportation system (everything is quite far from the base as well so you will be stuck on a bus or paying A LOT for cabs). Also, you will have to get transportation from the airport (25 minutes from base), to your hotel, to the base, back to the hotel, etc.... this is a lot of traveling and I don't know any other way to go about it then with a personal vehicle. In short, I really recommend renting a car and dressing nice and comfy. :) If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Well they might have changed it, but when i graduated from Air Force basic, we didn't have a formal graduation ceremony or parade.

If they now have graduation ceremonies, the dress would be semi formal, a dress or pants suit. no jeans, sweats.

Basically what you would wear to a high school or college graduation.

Ok, I found several webpages dealing with Air Force graduation, including a phone number for transportation and charges for those without a car.

MAC TRANS, tel (210) 670-8855

The webpage has alot of info written by someone who attended his own daughters graduation.

.
Boy, I must be getting old, things have sure changed since my day.

Do a web search for Lackland AFB's web site, call the Visitor's Center, and ask them. Get the straight story from the ones who know the correct info.

It's very formal actually. You'd be politically correct if you wore what you would to church or to a wedding. My Dad is Air Force pilot and they're always so strac!!
