i chose Continental Airlines because i used to fly them all the time when i lived in indianapolis...

from Continental Airlines website...

Children traveling unaccompanied pay a full adult fare.

An additional service charge is collected to cover extra handling required when an unaccompanied child travels. Please confirm this charge when placing your reservation.

Domestic Fee:

Domestic fees apply to travel within/between the U.S. (all 50 States), Canada and Mexico.

$50.00 USD/$65.00 CAD one-way for nonstop flights
$95.00 USD/$115.00 CAD one-way for connecting flights

Unaccompanied minors under 5 years of age are not accepted
Unaccompanied minors ages 5-7 years accepted for nonstop and direct flights only
Unaccompanied minors ages 8-14 accepted for nonstop, direct and connecting flights

Travel will not be allowed on a Continental flight departing between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless travel is on international flights, flights operating out of Honolulu, or domestic flights of 2 hours or less.

Unaccompanied Minors will not be accepted for travel on the last connecting flight of the day to their final destination.

In addition, Unaccompanied Minors are not accepted on flights which require an overnight stay in order to make a connection.

so it looks like you can send you son/daughter as long as you pay an extra fee so the airline is aware at the time of the reservation that a flight attendant will need to keep an eye on the child...

My aunt flew her 14 year old from Florida to Denver last summer. She had to pay an extra fare to have her son escorted from the gate to the plane... She was also asked to buy a non stop flight so they didnt have to deal with him changing planes. I helped her find the flight and figure out the whole thing... you just have to have someone meet at the gate -- and they have to prove identity to prove they are they to pick him up. I am not sure about train... I think I would feel safer sending my 14 year old on a plane instead of a train.. Trains are much longer and they stop more than planes do.. just call the Airline and ask them what their requirements are.. good luck!

my son use to travel from indy to colorado all the time and he wasnt that old you pay an extra amount and he is assigned an escort they take names and ids then when gets to point a that person has to match the name with proper id then when he returns they do the same thing over again. he loved it the treated him extra special. rememeber one time he had hold of my neck so hard was so glad to see me and the flight attendant was laughing said i still have to see you id . of course this was pre 9/11

A friend of mine just sent his 8yr old son to Texas by himself. He was told by the airlines it was ok as long as some one was there to meet him at the gate.
