I am planning on adopting a mastiff from a shelter but wanted to get advice from other mastiff owners on the breed. I have always wanted one and have been researching the breed for close to 4 months to make sure this is the dog for me. I have grown up with small to medium size dogs but have always wanted to have a large breed dog. Thanks for any additional info and advice on owning a mastiff (neopolian, bull, american, english, etc.)

Mastiffs are great dogs. Gentle giants, by all means. They'll intimidate a stranger merely by size & bark. My in-laws own an English Mastiff, and I've seen the SWEETEST Neapolitan mastiff, as well.
I believe English Mastiffs are the most popular.

Mastiffs are great pets specially inside the house when trained properly. But by all means, this does not mean you can leave them with your kids or with someone else's kids. Being a pitbull owner for around 6 years, I can say that I know my dog but I do not know or can never forecast when kids might do to my dog. This may result in a scenario people just can't seem to figure out and just blame it all on the breed in general.

Mastiffs have high demands for exercise as they are very agile and magnificent creatures with high prey drives, with makes them great pets for outdoor fun. Fetch, freesbies and even just plain jogging with them.

As for their diet, medium to large breed dogs need not too much protein. You may want to research on a stable adult diet for your dog and just give him some high protein supplements during a working day with you.

Yes, my sister has a mastiff, and several other people i know, my answer is THEY ARE BIG SOFTIES, they like to act like they are still a puppy, my sisters dog, (bear) love to sit on my lap when go to the couch, and hee just licks and licks, but might i suggest getting his saliva glands removed, because they slobber! and if you like big playful dogs then mastiffs are the right ones for you, (it really all depends on how you treat it as a puppy, so be playful and punish him whens he does wrong then you will have a great dog!)

Good Luck!

Personally, neopolitans are my favorite. They are by nature wary of strangers, but ours is very friendly once he knows someone. Here is an awaesome site to learn more about them: http://www.neorescue.net/abouttheneo.php?PHPSESSID=72770dda4c068bb015848eefa77781bb
