We have to maintain godly virtues even if others are treating us abusively. That is being a martyr and might as well be taking up that cross. If we forgive our enemies that is taking up that cross. If we are dedicated to realizing true love of God and others persecute us, then that is taking up that cross.

That so-called "cross"...........

When Jesus spoke of a "cross," He was speaking of something the people around him were acquainted with, since capital punishment, done in public, was a common means of execution at that time.
The condemned person was forced to carry his own cross to where he would be nailed to it and die upon it, while crowds watched.
At that time these words of Jesus might have meant "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him be prepared to be led out to public execution, following my example"
In other words, taking up the cross means facing persecution and death for Jesus' sake

The saying means "Realize your sins and follow Jesus Christ, the lord and savior". The cross symbolizes sin, because Jesus died on the cross to wash away our sins, and the saying means that if we realize our sins and follow Jesus, then we will be forgiven again and again.

Fr. Stan Fortuna has an excellent DVD about it.

Isn't it interesting that this is the second question I've answered today about suffering.

Hmmm... During Lent too. Must be on everyone's mind.

Our cross is that which makes us suffer. Jesus suffered greatly on the cross. We accept our daily suffering just as he did.

Basically.... if life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Bloom where you are planted.

Whatever life sends your way, do the best you can with it and try to live each day as Jesus would have lived it.

If you're being jumped, lumped and thumped, offer it to God in conjunction with Christ's sacrifice and forgive the jumpers, lumpers and thumpers just as He did.

Do it Jesus' way (whatever "it" might be).

'Nough said?

Jesus life was one of self-sacrifice and culminated in his giving his life for mankind. His followers are to be willing to do the same.

Repent of your sins...deny yourself...change your life, attitude, and choices to follow the Lord's commands in faith...and expect to be persecuted by a dark wold. In the end, however, expect to find salvation through your faith.
