Is it just me or do many people raise their voice as if they want all to hear the conversation and know how important their business is? Am I delusional?

They want to show off. They want everyone to know they are having a BBQ, or that they are getting married, or that they drive a Jag, or that they have six children who are all on the honor roll. Its all about bragging.

Oh and don't you just hate it when people are using cell phones and they will stick the ear piece to their ear, but every time they want to say something they shift the mouthpiece over their mouths. That just irritates me. I always think to myself "Hello!!!! It is 2007, the microphone is strong enough to catch crap you say two feet away!!!!"

Sometimes it's hard to hear the person you're calling on a cell, especially if it's an older phone, or an area where the coverage isn't so great, or the surroundings are very noisy. When you have trouble hearing the other person, it's natural to assume they also have trouble hearing you and to speak louder.
A better option would be to find a place that's a bit more quiet, but many people either don't think of that or don't bother.

I find it just as annoying. Especially when they are doing something like checking out at a store and cannot put it down for 2 minutes. They do talk louder, I think it has to do with the perception that you need to be louder to be heard on the cell phone. The cell phone is greatest and worst invention ever.

Its because they do want all to hear them. Phone calls should be a private matter. I don't want to hear about your latest checkup to the doctor...or how bad the food was at a certain resturant and the end results. As a cashier people do this all the time to me. They talk even louder than is needed. I think its to block me out or something...even though when i need to ask them a question, or tell them their total because they don't pay any attention.

I will not be dishonest and lie and say that I have not been guilty of it one time or another. However, I do try to keep in mind that it is disrespectful. If am in the grocery aisle and I am calling home to see if there is anything else needed that is one thing, but I usually try to contain my calls to a brief "Let me call you back when I am in my car" I have though on occasion, but it does take one glare from people to give me the reminder. I don't take offense it was not polite of me in the first place. But, my biggest pet peeve is when someone is in the toilet and talking on the phone that is out right rude.

I've thought about this for a long time ;-) I have some theories about it.

Have you noticed for example how people will also speak louder when the signal is not good or if they are calling someone that lives far?

When you talk on your cellphone you don't have the mouthpiece directly in your mouth, so people unconsciously think they have to speak louder so that their voice will go through.

Also, people tend to think that if you have bad signal then if you speak louder suddenly your voice will get through.

That's my humble opinion. what do you think?

That is my absolute biggest pet peeve! I can't stand it when people are so rude. People are up in arms over wire tapping, the Patriot Act, and other privacy issues, yet everyone knows their business anyway while they're yelling into their phones in public places. Go figure.

I think that people are just in their own world and don't really care about how their actions affect others.

It is their way of getting attention and what about when they increase the volume of their phone so that you are hearing both sides of the conversation Oh how irritating!

it's rude! and they should ban them in every state when you are driving. They have now here for young people, but the older people are just as bad. I don't know what we did before cell phones were invented.

Sometimes, the receiver of the call...can't hear or understand so we talk a little louder...hoping they will hear.

"Can you hear me now?"

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Maybe the person on the other end can't...but the rest of us do.

Peace be with you.
