I have been told this is normal by the dentist but it is over a week now and still no feeling.

I assume that this involved a bottom/lower tooth.

Because of the anatomy of the nerve that goes to the lower teeth, it is not uncommon for folks to remain numb for some time. This is called parathesia and is usually related to the inferior alveolar nerve.

Unfortunately, there is no real way to predict if or when the feeling will come back. Know that in most cases it does come back, but it make take several more weeks or longer.

I would advise keeping in close contact with your dentist to inform her about your progress.

Try massaging the area around the numbness. Tell the dentist that a week later doesnt seem normal and ask him if there was any damage to this area during the extraction. At Least if there was damage you have closure. Can you still move everything else? If you can then don't worry, the numbness will blend into the living on either side over time it just will seem severe at the moment. Anyway, a bit of numbness or a massive rotten stump buried in your jaw?

This can be normal if it was carried out on the lower jaw,
you have a nerve in the lower jaw called the Inferior Dental Nerve and this is the nerve that supplies all of the lower teeth.
If this has been damaged in someway whilst a procedure is being carried out you will lose sensitivity in the lower jaw area.
The feeling should return but if your still concerned contact your dentist and have him/her put your mind at rest.

an unusually long time for you, to remain numb

The nerve has been damaged during extraction .

If the loss of feeling, persists till Monday
go to your dentist again ,

NOTE:
Meanwhile ;
To avoid damage, to your mouth ,tongue and lips
be very careful , not to drink very hot liquids .
or do a lot of chewing on that side of your mouth
