i live with my 5 year old daughter (we has a pom that we lost due to a divorce my ex took her and i can't get her back/tryed) and i have the lazyest cat that you have ever met....he does fine with big and little dogs....my bf is a truck driver so i want some company while im home alone.....i am a stay at home mom....i want a female too.....
So which one do i pick?

i wanted a yorkie and i did my homework on them...trust me have spent months looking at them and reading about them.....now i am thinking that i may want a shih-tuz or apso after seeing them on tv....my daughter is great with small dogs and doesn't like big ones....she isn't your typical kid when it comes to pets...she feeds her cat everday and has since she was 2 years old (not that she has to she askes to)....

I have two Yorkies, one Lhasa Apso and one Shih Tzu, so I think I could give you a pretty good idea, even though even inside breeds there are lots of different types of behavior.
The York is a very active and loyal dog, but it tends to bark a lot and be snappy.
The Lhasa Apso is a sweetheart, loyal, calm, only barks only and if the Yorkie does. I would recommend the Lhasa if I had not gotten a Shih Tzu.
Shih Tzus are the best in my opinion. They are sweet, loyal, a great companion for you that is at home, energetic, but not hiperactive as some Yorkies, happy dogs, they DO NOT shed (which is great in my opinion), inteligents, and I could go and go.
I love them all, but according to your description I would choose the Shih Tzu.
One more thing, don't get impressed if people tell you that they are not good with kids because it's a lie. You should always supervise the dog while playing with a child to avoid abuse. If the kid abuses the dog it's obvious that they will be alert next time, and then they can get mean.
My dogs loves kids and they only gives licks all the time!

Yorkies do good with older children.
Shih Tzu's get along wonderful with children of all ages. (ours is a wonderful little girl)
Lhasa Apso's and children usually do not mix .They get a little snippy.

Yorkshire Terriers should have considerate older children.
Shih Tzu's will be fine around polite & considerate children.
Lhasa Apsos will NOT tolerate ''rough'' children.

They are all wonderful dogs. They all require that you brush there hair on a daily bases. So I think you should just go check all them out and see which one you and your lovely daughter like most!!!
