My bosses and co-workers have been asking me to go to happy hour with them after work. Two problems exist. I am not a big drinker I will drink occasionally, but it is not my thing. Second, I have been a couple of times and I do not like they way they act when they are drinking. Many get loud obnoxious and start acting like annoying frat boys when they are drunk. Also it is kind of weird to see some married guy attempting to hit on a girl half his age.

I wouldn't recommend that you pass on it. There is a bond being formed during this after work activity. If you're not involved, you'll be looked at as an outsider. Unless you're part of management, you can't afford to separate yourself just yet. When you get higher up in rank, then the employees won't want you there anyway because they'll want to vent about the "boss".

Suck it up and go. You don't have to get smashed but certainly don't be judgmental of their drinking. Hit the buffet. Nurse a beer. Tell a few jokes and laugh at theirs. You don't have to go all the time but you need to go at least once and awhile. Stay for an hour or so until they get too drunk and obnoxious then head out for the evening saying you have a date or something (even if the date is with your remote control at home).

Trust me - you want to be in the group especially if your boss is there. It's part of office politics. If you're not there, your boss is getting to know your peers and will be more inclined to favor them on the job.

Don't lie, it could become a habit.

You should go if it's your boss asking and your not a non-drinker at least one time, that is the polite way of handling the problem. You don't have to act like they do and staying is another story, have a quick drink and excuse yourself politely.

Sounds like you have been out with this group before or have heard some storeys about their bad behaviour.

The best way to handle this situation, is to just straight up tell them, you are not interested, it's no ones business why, also if there is a person, or two you wouldn't mind hanging out with, ask them to do something you enjoy instead, otherwise, honesty is the best policy, they might think your boring, but at least they will respect you being strong enough to make your own choices, and tell the truth, by the way not wanting to go to a bar doesn't make you boring, if the only thing those men have to do is, go out to bars, in my book, that makes them boring.

Politely decline and offer up some alternate ideas for an after work hangout session.

You can say it was your new years resolution to give up drinking and it makes it easier to not be an enviroment that is tempting.

Or just plain tell them, "Thank you for considering me, however I really am not big drinker and say have one for me".

Just tell them it's not your thing. Let them know you are not interested in going out drinking, they might feel obligated to ask you since you are a part of thier at work buddies, and like hangin with you. If you let them know you are not interested in it, they should get it.

Tell them you can't miss your AA meeting.

OR, just tell them you have to get home for whatever reason. Feed the Dog, have a package coming from the mailman. you can think up something creative.

Tell them you're in a 12-step program.

You could always just say no thank-you and leave it at that. You don't have to give them an explanation.

Next time you get passed up for that promotion, you can come back to this and say to yourself, "I should have stopped being a puss and just had a few drinks with the boss."
