So, I took my dog to the vet, my yorkshire terrier who is 16 years old now, and they said he has the beginning of kidney failure. I know he's an old guy now but I feel like Im making him die sooner because I fed him that stupid Iams dog food....

Basically, what are the odds that I killed my best friend of 16 years..:(

You didn't kill your dog... no need to feel guilty.

At 16 years old kidney failure is a given. Your dog is about 96 years old so at that age it's natural for things to start to fail. I had two cats that passed away from kidney failure and I never even fed them Iams, it's just old age. There is a treatment you can do to help them with their kidney failure. I was required to give my cats fluids three times a week with an IV, it helps prolong their life for a little longer than it would without.

Don't blame yourself, you didn't give your dog kidney failure, just like I didn't give my cats kidney failure, I could blame it on the cheap grocery store food but it's a waste of energy.

16 for a dog is a long life, I'm greatful my cats lived to 20 and 17 y/o.

Hey, who said Iams gives dogs kidney failure? They are expensive, but I truly don't believe that Iams could cause a dog problems like that! Anyway, even if Iams DID cause your dog to have kidney failure, then it is not your fault- how could you know? Anyways, from the sound of it, you care too much about your dog than to "make him die sooner"!
Ps dont worry just have lotsa fun with him while you can : -)

substitute into there a remember at the instant? Cats do have kidney failure for dissimilar motives, not in simple terms from the nutrients. except your vet backs up the declare by means of an post-mortem as to what the reason substitute into, you truly can not shout this out over the internet. you may have data. Mine has kidney failure as an ongoing element for the previous 3 years. He gets a mixture of four diverse meals plus uncooked and a few cooked meats. he's eighteen, his gadget is slowing down and the kidney failure is an area of standard ageing.

I am so sorry you have to go through this!! The same thing happend with our family dog I spent my childhood with, a carin terrier. She had kidney failure and was losing significant weight, she was around 13 or 14.

It is due to old age sweetie, do not blame yourself for this at all! 16 yrs is a long happy life for your little dog, just continue to give her your love and friendship to live out the rest of her life. It is so hard to lose a pet, especially one we have had for so long and has become our friend and part of the family. God bless you and your pup :-)

It only refers to the Iams canned & pouched wet foods, if that changes anything.

Recently, the news has said that they've found rat poison in the recalled foods.

The fact that he has the ''beginnings'' of kidney failure, means that they may have a way of reversing or preventing the failure from following through.

I think at 16 years old it's probably nature causing the kidney failure and not the food. You've obviously done something right for many years.

I wouldn't say that You killed the dog.. Afterall, You did not feed the food, knowing that it was tainted with rat poison, or being recalled did you?
People all over N.America have been feeding the foods and have lost their pets.
It's the fault of the company producing the ingredient for these other dog food companies. And the dog food companies themselves for not testing the foods before they put them out there on the market.

You didn't give him kidney failure because if it was the food..I'm guessing you did it before the recall and would not have known. It may not have even been the food...kidney failure happens with elderly dogs.

You won't have killed him, but now learn from this and feed him something else. It wasn't your fault, they didn't ensure as they should have the quality of the product. What we did with out dogs when they got kidney problems was to feed them boiled chicken and white rice, they both lived to 19 years very happilly.

After 16 years, it's probably something the poor guy developed on his own.
Don't beat yourself up. Whether it was the Iams food or old age, your fur-baby knows you love him and that you would never intentionally harm him.
