declare it in your checked baggage, you may check unloaded firearms and ammuntion provided they are stored separately.
Ammunition - Check with your airline or travel agent to see if ammunition is permitted in checked baggage on the airline you are flying.
If ammunition is permitted, it must be declared to the airline at check-in. Small arms ammunitions for personal use must be securely packed in fiber, wood or metal boxes, or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.
Ask about limitations or fees, if any, that apply.

Here is the problem. You'll be crossing international borders. I am not positive about Nations south, but in Mexico you will do some very serious prison-time (regardless of your nationality) for being in possession of even a single bullet. This I know for fact, as it happened to a friend of mine (nine months in a Mexican prison).
I suspect Latin American countries have similar laws. And the .9mm is consider military which would compound the matter by making you look like a militant with designs on overthrowing their governments. I WOULD NOT DO IT. See about mailing or shipping instead.

Go to the airport ahead of time. Find out what you need to do. They have a policy for transporting firearms. You have to disable the firearm and a gun lock must be in place. On our last hunting trip they required we remove the bolts from our rifles and a cable lock be ran through them. They made us remove the slides from our pistiols and lock them in the same fashion. The guns had to be carried in marked and locked cases.
They can be shipped with you in stored luggage if you follow the rules.

Check with your airline and see what they say. Empty mags shouldn't be a problem in your bags as long as you declare them. But check just to be safe. No point having your bags searched and you pulled aside for a private chat with the security staff.

I don't think you can bring anything flamable or explosive... Isn't ammo considered an explosive?
oh, and will you email me your flight number if they let you take it on? I want to make sure I'm not on that flight.
