When I've had them, a 'hot tamale' is a popular Southwest US/Mexican food consisting of a spicy meat center wrapped in a moist cornmeal dough. A husk of corn is tightly bundled around the meat & pastry, then the whole thing is steam cooked for several minutes. The meat is pre-cooked, so you're just warming it up with the steam.

When I was in grade school they would serve "Hot Tamales" for lunch. It was forever before I knew the rest of the world referred to them as Sloppy Joes. Must be a local oddity.
