Well, hopefully they'll be wrong, too.

The Mayans, an advanced civilisation who once lived in the Yucatan peninsula in Central America, made a calendar system which was far more accurate than the calender we use - it only loses a day every hundred thousand years or something, whereas we have to have a leap year ever 4 years. Their calender just ends on December 21, 2012. It charts hundreds of thousands of years of history, and ends then.
Some people have interpreted this to mean that they thought that would be the date of the end of the world. There's no direct evidence for that, but they did believe that time ran in cycles, and that there were a number of ages. At the end of each age the earth is destroyed by some means (fire, winds, floods) and is re-created by the gods. Our age is supposedly the last, and is due to be destroyed by earthquakes. However, we haven't uncovered anything that says explicitly that they believed this would occur in 2012. It's inference.

The Mayan people lived a long time ago. ( south America)
They had a calendar.
The calendar predicts the end in 2012.
It is a story that has circulated for a long time.
Where are the Mayan people now?
Gone with the wind and no one knows where.
Many people have chosen to believe this fable.
By the way the year now is 2010 not 2007.
That means less that two years to go.

The Mayans were a people of Central and North America. They developed a calendar. The last year they created for that calendar was 2012. They did not predict that the world would end in this year. The calendar simply doesn't go past this date. Some people have interpreted that to mean that they thought the world would end in that year. This is pure speculation.

Although a Primitive Civilization, the Mayans were accomplished Mathematicians. They devised an amazingly accurate Calender, and carried it's calculations up to 2012. Pretty Cool !

Right, people say the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, which for some reason means the world is going to end. My calendar ends on December 31st though, so we might not make it to 2012.

Damnit man, I've heard some stories about the 'End of the World' happening in the year 2012. I haven't put much thought into this, but we ARE living in a time where Humans are destroying the world and themselves! Um, did I read your question properly? I might have given you the wrong answer..

Some kind of planet or star alignment. Supposedly causing a catastrophic event.
I think 2012 is too early for a catastrophic event that possibly destroys the earth.
Possible if the Rapture happens this year, we can squeeze in the antichrist reign etc.

They can only make them so big. If there were still Mayans around, they would have a new one by now.
