Chemical imbalances usually refer to the imbalance of serotonin, dopamine, etc. These are the chemicals responsible for depression, Bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric conditions.
Modern science is now using high-tech scans to view brains of people with these imbalances. The pictures of the brains are different and people who have a chemical imbalance are showing less activity in certain areas of the brain.

Actually, there are chemicals/hormones and other things in your blood that can get out of whack and screw up your thinking. Caffeine is a simple example. LSD is a nastier one. Those substances temporarily alter your brain chemistry. Of course LSD can do more permanent harm.
Some imbalances can be tested for. Excessive sugar in the blood can cause terrible mental and physical side effects, but diabetes can be treated. Overload of testosterone or estrogen or low dopamine can all cause changes in behavior that can be treated.
Talk to a doctor. There's lots of things that can screw up your brain from outside: chemicals to genetics to environment and behavior patterns.

Psychiatrists listen to what you have to say and then they decide that you have a chemical imbalance or you don't.
There is NO blood test and NO MRI scan can be done.
-It is something that psychiatrists made up in the 50's and it stuck and now everybody believes it to be science.
