I need it to tie around an old sofa, as I can only get it out via the window, so it has to be sturdy.

You are seriously going to lower an old sofa out of the window on a rope as a DIY job???
Does the old sofa have some sentimental value??
If it means that much get the removal men in, if its going to be dumped, saw it up and get it out the door.
