Part of the problem is when we shut down most of the mental hospitals in the U.S. We can help them by getting them the psychiatric help they need.
If they're mentally okay, then they should be given the resources to find a home in low-income housing.
In a country as wealthy as the U.S., there's no reason anyone should be on the streets.

As you can see, there are many answers to your great question. Some leave a lot to be desired, while others are sincere and thoughtful. Over many years I have been Blessed to have been able to work with and support several programs aiding the homeless. I thank God that my family has been blessed to have the things we have.
I believe that everyone is an unrepeatable gift of God. Some choose to take a road to destruction while others due to life's challenges end up homeless. Families as well as single people are out there.
Everyone who has the opportunity can and should help where they can. Some with their time, others with their talents and still others with financial aid. We as human beings must get back to caring for each other. We must stop taking negative shots at those unfortunate people who end up homeless. There is only a very small percent who are homeless by choice. If those who complain join those of us who realize the truth and take positive action we can meet the challenge and make our world a better place for all!!!

The city I live in has some of the best homeless facilities in the nation. The homeless that need help can get help, but there are some homeless people who do not want help and there is nothing one can do about it.

As anyone who is or has been homeless can tell you, each has his own reason for being homeless. perhaps some through drugs, some through illness, lack of finances, mental health issues...the list goes on and on.
Therefore, one may want to find an organization working with homeless people and determine what contribution to make to the organization. One must consider that not all homeless people are connected to these organizations and one will not reach a segment of the homeless population.

can't really help the homeless if you tried, the homeless basically gave up on their own therefore they deserve to live that way. anyone could be a homeless but some of us strive to survive and live a productive life and have ambitions. there are opportunities for these homeless people out there but they decide to go the idiotic drunken don't want to do anything direction.

You can't. There are tons of places that the homeless can go for help. The decent ones go and take advantage of that. We should have that safety net for those in need. But if a person doesn't want to do what he or she needs to do to get straightened out there is nothing you can do for them. When I was a kid we called these people "bums." That's what most of the hardcore homeless are. No hope for them. No sympathy or one penny from me. If you want to do some kind of good for people, there are other ways you can spend your time and energy. Don't waste it on people who don't deserve it.

Instead of just building temporary shelters, build rehabilitation centers and give the homeless permanent housing, rehabilitation centers that provide job training and drug and alcohol treatment programs and also help the homeless to find permanent employment and teach them how to become productive citizens once they graduate from the programs and enter into their new lives. It takes more than just a meal to help them and it's alot of homeless children that was failed by the government, not all homeless people are just lazy, alcoholic, drug using, losers. There are alot of hardworking people who want to work and get ahead and just by a shear of bad luck lost their jobs and their homes. And what about the elderly, who are turned down when seeking employment, and rely on Social Security to pay all of their bills and receive only enough to barely buy food let alone live on, most of whom has served our country, ultimately they loose their homes and without a permanent address they also are denied Social Security. And it's sad because most of us are only a pay check away from loosing our homes, and god forbid if you find a pink slip on your desk tomorrow or a call from the bosses office, or just what if your business fails to succeed.

I live by a homeless shelter and most, not all are drug addicted, alcoholic, losers who don't care. It's sad because
it affects the ones who are truly down on their luck.
Best we can do is just give to the shelters, trust in the people who run them, or (and I've thought about this) open your own.
And know you've done what you can.

There are many homless shelters where the homless, and indigent, and those in need can go. Contribute to them with your time or donations. There are so many. If your concerned and can't find a shelter to voulenteer at why not try starting one of you're own through your church? "The poor will always be with us." that doesn' mean we should ignore them or judge them, "The sun shines on the good as well as the bad." Be a light by your example.
