I agree with the suggestion that you really should be seen by campus health and at least get a culture done if it's really bad. The one thing with strep is that the sore throat will eventually go away even if untreated. However if untreated there is a chance that you could develop serious heart or kidney problems related to the untreated disease. If your culture is positive, you will need antibiotics to cover yourself against these more serious issues, and also to lessen the time you will be contagious to others. On the other hand if your culture is negative, you should not take antibiotics b/c it most likely would be viral at that point.

To alleviate your symptoms, try Tylenol or Advil for pain relief, and gargle with warm salt water several times a day. Also drink plenty of fluids to keep your throat moist and to cut down on any draining secretions that may be irritating your throat further.

You need a throat culture to determine if you have strep throat. People tend to attribute every sore throat as strep. Typically with strep you will run a higher fever, and you may have swollen lymph nodes in your neck. Try taking Tylenol or Advil for pain, drink warm fluids, and rest. If it is not better in a couple of days or you get worse, call your health care provider. Eighty to ninety percent of sore throats are VIRAL in nature, so antibiotics are not effective. Health care providers are notorious for overprescribing antibiotics, hence the emergence of superbugs resistant to them.

go to the campus nurse. Every college should have one, or a college clinic. You need to have a swab of your throat to be sure it's strep. If it is you'll need antibiotics. You can do this where you are at any clinic or family practice Dr's office. No need to drive home. My kids always went to the campus student's clinic.
