I want to cover my kitchen countertops and backplash with a heavy duty contact paper that looks like marble. I've seen where it says if you're going to paint the countertops to coat it with a waterbased polyurethane, can I coat the contact paper with that also? Thanks!

Contact Paper For Countertops

The answer is yes. You do not have to use coarse sand paper. Buy a can of contact cement and follow the instructions. Make sure the Formica will fit the counter top. You may have to remove the counter and work on it off the counter if it is on three sides. A router will come in handy if you are also doing the back board and the front of the counter. Contact cement once started cannot be moved that is one reason that it will be easier to do this in another room. Also the cement is flammable so not to be used near an open flame such as a pilot light. I believe that paper is placed down before the cement is applied and then unrolled as the Formica is placed from the starting edge.

I covered my countertops with contact paper in an apartment many years ago. It worked quite well. Just don't try to chop or cut things directly on it, and remember not to put hot pots on it either. I don't know what happened if they tried to remove it after I moved out---it was on there for about 3 years. I don't think I'd try painting over the contact paper. That's a bit chancy.

You can coat it, but it will likely lift if the surface isn't prepped well. Try it on a portion of your counter. It may make sense to use an adhesive that is used to lay laminate.

Your better off sanding and painting your counter tops and back splash. Even if you do that and still seal it, the first time a hot pot gets on the surface it will bubble.

The painting process (with correct amounts of dry time in between) will put your counters out of commission for about a week.

You will need to do some very heavy preparation if you want the contact paper to stick for very long, due to the old soap and oil residues. All the polyurethane will do it coat the top, not prevent the contact paper from "lifting."

If I were you, I would call a home improvement place like Home Depot or Lowes and ask for suggestions.

I wouldn't think that painting the contact paper would work. You might try to find some sort of spray on stuff that is used on slick surfaces.

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/TMi81
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.
