pay attention to what he likes and go from there. Presents should be personal. I always listen to my bf when he likes something, and then for a special ocassion (bday, christmas) I buy it for him. Is there anything that hes been wanting lately?

Can you add more details. Is he an active person, how old, any special interests ??
If he's not a big present person its better to make it something really thoughtful. For the guy I'm dating all I have to do is make him dinner to get him to do backflips. If you have to go to some work that will really show him that you put some thought into it. For example - I had one that was into a weird form of martial arts that I knew nothing about so I researched it and found a cool rare weapon that they use for practice on ebay and ordered it for him. He really liked.

Think about what he likes, his hobbies. Into video games? Movies? Music? Books? Look through his collection, try to find something that's missing, and buy him that. It shows you really know him as a person, and he'll enjoy the feeling.

What is he interested in? Pay attention to his hobbies and either get him something he could use or perhaps tickets to an event he'd like to go pertaining to his interests. I find the best gifts tend to be the ones that are useful and show you pay attention to who that person is.

well when it come to shopping for guys i am hopeless. but for my boyfriend birthday i bought him a watch but he already had one. the funny thing was that he was willing to wear mine instead of the one he have and everytime he wears it i feel a warm feeling within so i guess it don't matter what you buy him. it's the thought that counts. whatever you buy i guarantee that it will be greatly appreciated....good luck!
