Do your job and be pleasant and courteous to all. It's not necessary that you be a social butterfly.

It's not unacceptable, but if you are hoping for a promotion or longetivity in a layoff, your social skills will be taken into account. In otherwords, if the boss can promote someone to be a manager, will he promote the person who satys in her cube and works alone, or the person who has a good work record and knows her coworkers personalities and can get them to work as a team?
You don't have to be everyone's best friend and into their personal lives, but you should at least have a cordial working relationship. And you only get that by getting to know your coworkers and socializing somewhat.
People who advance in a lot of fields are the ones who play golf or tennis with the boss- the time they have socializing and talking about work or how they approach work problems acts in their favour.

I don't believe it's unacceptable, but in many jobs you need to "network" and generally be deemed as likeable if you want to succeed. Sometimes doing your job well is simply not enough. You don't have to make lifelong friends or reveal the details of your life to your co-workers, but small gestures like smiling and saying "hello;" listening if someone needs to talk or is excited about something in their life (like an upcoming wedding or borth of a child); and accepting an occcasional offer to go to lunch or out for "drinks" with the crowd (doesn't mean you have to drink), should be enough.
When you keep to yourself, it can give the impression that you have a condescending attitude or that you're just plain strange.
It is unfortunate, but we all judge the book by the cover, and when you are working side by side with others it is important to have a "cover" or outward attitude / appearance that the majority of folks can relate to.

That describes me and I don't think its unacceptable. The only thing is that it won't open as much doors as you wish it would. You have to socialize a little more in order to grow within your company. At least that is the way its here.

I was like that, and to some extent still am. The problem I ran into was my co-workers started rumors about what I did mainly because I did not show up to the "office social functions" too often. Lesson don't be too chatty, just be open and friendly when people want to talk with you.

Acceptable? You can pretty much do whatever you want. It's more a matter of is it better or not.
I don't interact with many people at work. There's less bullsh*t, fakey conversations that way, but you do feel more isolated. But I'm not planning to stick around here past 2007, so I don't really care. It's a trade-off. Choose whatever you can live with more.

No, I wouldn't think it is unacceptable, but your co workers will like you more if you socialize with them some.

Its a very safe road to travel!! Yet some people tend to look over you... Sometimes thats a good thing. You dont want to be known as the person at work who starts gossip or have strong views of the workplace. Seperating work and personal life is the best way to go.

Depends on what your job is. If you have a job that required teamwork, then you're not doing your job. If you're not conversing along with everyone else, then you're not a team player (social or work-related) and you could be considered stand-off-ish. Don't be sh when it comes to doing what you have to in order to get the job done.

It isn't that it is unacceptable, but it is in your best interest to get to know your co-workers. They can offer valuable advice or can help you out if you need it.
