I purchased a vehicle from a dealership about a week ago, but I am noticing shaking in the steering wheel when I brake. I have not started payments on it yet, but I was wondering is there a time limit that the dealer has to exchange or me return the car if I am already having problems.

First off does the vehicle you purchased come with factory or extended warranty? If so it might be a good idea to just take it in to your local dealer and have the techs look at what the problem might be and get it fixed. Have them thoroughly check out the vehicle for any other issue you might have and unless you are just unhappy with the vehicle itself then I suggest you contact your salesman and inquire into the process of returning or exchanging the vehicle for another one on the lot you may have your eye on.I really do not know what the exact time is that you have to give it back but its a bit frustrating to know that the moment you drive it off the lot it depreciates in value. A friend of mine bought an 07 santa fe from a local dealer and they gave her 30 days to return/exchange it. Well good luck with your issue I hope it all gets resolved and that I was of some help.

If the vehicle was new, you have no problem with getting repairs done under warranty. If the vehicle was used, the dealer has to spell out exactly what is covered. Anything else not listed is not covered. You cannot normally return a vehicle. You did sign a legal contract and if they are willing to do the warranty repairs, there is not really anything you can do. Some states like Texas have a lemon law that forces the dealer to take back the vehicle under circumstances spelled out in the law, but the documentation of any problems is up to you the vehicle owner. Yes, the first step is to contact the dealer. But also learn your rights in your state. Contact the DMV and ask about lemon laws in your state. If the contract you signed states "As IS" you are in for a fight to get it fixed. Next time you buy a car, have it checked by a mechanic first... it's worth the investment.

I am betting that you bought it "as is". Unless the dealer really likes you there will not be much you can do. If the brakes are a safety issue you may be able to get them to fix it. It should have been caught during their inspection. Most likely it is the brake rotors and my guess is you will be stuck replacing them yourself.

Look over your purchase contract, then go back to the dealer with the car and the contract. Be sure you are familiar with the contract before you go in.
