Are there suitable amenities for you to recreate with your pet? Personally, I pay a good deal of income tax, sales tax, property tax etc - and use local parks pretty much exclusively for recreating with my dog but feel I get little value for my hard-earned tax dollar.

Too much is spent instead on playgrounds and playing fields for a very small percentage of the population (children) - when in fact said facilities are for the most part unused except for summertime and weekends.

how about your community - as a dog owner - are your needs being served?

helena.. by that same token "why should the government have to provide" .. that's why we pay taxes isn't it - to meet all our needs??

why should I pay taxes for schools and playgrounds and baseball diamonds I never use?

So long as public parks provide amenities specific to special interest user groups (like children or baseball teams or skateboarders) then as tax payers don't we have a right to expect service for our contribution?

I might add the dog owning recreating public reprensents a SIGNIFICANTLY larger tax paying base that glider flyers.. (and in many jurisdictions - parents too)

as a dog owner myself I find it hard to be able to bring the pups into public to play and enjoy themselves and ourselves as parents with children do but, the sad fact is that people still look at dogs as just a piece of property and don't think beyond tying them up in the yard.

Through the petitioning more and more cities along with Kennel Clubs are working on raising funds for dog parks, but even having the facilities that are safe for us and our dogs to run and play doesn't change the one big problem.

That one big problem is the owners who think that they don't have to pick-up their dogs downloads and those same owners who think that their dog is not aggressive and still brings the dog to the park because they can. It is people and situations like that, that rune it for everyone.

Personally I am less worried about the downloads than I am ignorant owners

Nah there is really nothing around here specifically for dogs to use.. but I have to say that in reality where I live such a place is irrelevant. We are surrounded by wilderness and hundreds and hundreds of lakes so far from roads that you can let your dog do whatever it pleases. I can walk out into the bush and let my dogs off whenever it pleases me. I live in Northern Canada and my town is quite small and surrounded by wilderness. What I would like though is for my town to spend funds on a better shelter, right now the municipal by-law enforcement agency for dogs is very poor... a small shelter where they dont care about the dogs, no medical care at ALL, and the dogs can be killed under the discretion of the operators after only 3 days!! Yes thats right 3 days and the dog can be killed, they dont advertise the pets for adoption, they dont put ads out to help reunite pets with their owners and their phone number is near impossible to find unless you know the private kennel name or the only officers name. I want my town to take better care of our best friends by providing more protection and better laws against neglect and abuse and better facilities and policies regarding our animal control. As it is if you know the guy you can get out of a fine for not adhering to the leash laws.. I have reported my neighbour many times and they just dropped the charges and I still cant walk by that house because his dog is ALWAYS loose and tries to attack my dogs. The leash laws arent enforced, the abuse laws arent enforced and the only thing they care about is getting the money for a licence for you every single year for services that they dont provide. Bottom line is I dont care about dog parks etc I care about the dogs that dont have protection and I care that the laws arent really being enforced... I wish my area did have more dog friendly places but more importantly dog AND owner friendly laws that are properly enforced!

As a human I know I have more privilages then a dog should. As a parent I know I want my children to have more, safer places to play then any dog does. As a trainer of 27 years, I have never used a dog park, ever. I do not believe in them ans I think that they are full of people who do not have a basic knowledge of dog psychology or understand pack theory. I also do not trust that these places are not full of desease from dogs not being properly taken care of. As a person who cares about his dogs, I train all of them in off leash obedience and as a result I can take them anywhere I please off leash, without creating a problem for anyone. I live in the middle of a large city, not that many places you can go to take your dogs to, but, if I drive enough, there are some open areas available early in the morning or late in the evening I can go to and let my dogs run and play. Great question by the way.

There is a massive estate (it used to be owned by a family until they gave it to the council in lieu of inheritance tax) near where I live, and there is lots of nice woodland, a few ponds, and a deer park, so yes I would say that my needs are met.

At the end of my grandparent's road, there is about 400 acres of woodland for anyone to use. They live in the inner city so it's pretty cool.

BUT why should the gov have to provide facilities for you to do an activity you enjoy, just because you pay your taxes? I am a glider pilot and the government doesn't provide an airfield for our use, even though we do pay our taxes. In fact, we are in danger of losing it due to the reclassification of airfields as brownfield sites by the government.

no my community does not really cater to pets either
its all play grounds for kids I would love to have a park where my two dogs can run free & play without being on a leash
but the government could care less of pet owners that is not what brings in the votes but it could..

Like your community mine does not have any place to bring your dog to play catch or even just run with the dogs. I take them for a good run very early in the morning just so I don't disturb anyone else. It's a shame isn't it!

I'd be happier if they'd use my money to enforce the leash law. My dogs are fenced or walked on leash, but the neighbors, noooo.
