I am looking for a cocker spaniel puppy near southwest virginia.

You can try www.puppyfind.com. This site will give you local or national breeders. Here you can check out different breeders as well as their location. Buying locally (and not from a pet store) means you can actually see the parents of the puppy and see whether or not the breeders take good care of the animals. Good luck!

heck the AKC website for a list of breeders, or even the breed club in your area.
You don't want to buy from a Puppymill or BYBer, you want a quality dog with some sort of health guarantee... Registered, pedigree, and someone who knows their dogs and can help you if you need it.

Don't buy from a petstore, they buy from puppy mills. No self respecting breeder would ever sell their puppies to a petstore, so when they tell you that they are getting them from a breeder, it might be true, but it's not a breeder who cares about the breed, only one who cares about the cash.
