Applications? Roll diameter sensing, fluid level control, obstacle detection for robotics, many others.

I have seen estate agents using it for a rough measurement of all the room sizes in a house.

And the old Polaroid cameras used it to measure the distance to the object, and adjusted the focus accordingly.

The measurement would very coarse. The highest sound frequencies are too low for any accuracy.
