The entire northern arc of Metro Atlanta would be fine. Now these are not as small as they used to be, but they are plenty safe as well as nice. To get small, you have to get away. It is really hard to say there are close places to Atlanta that are also small. It is the inherient problem Atlanta is facing right now. The suburbs are expanding out because the close places are getting crowded.

Dacula is very nice, Woodstock is as well. They are very upscale and not crowded yet. Both are about 40 minutes from the city (in good traffic). Alpharetta is getting to be pretty bustling, but it is very affluent. Peachtree City is to the south and a very close knit community. There are golf cart trails everywhere. It is a bit of a treck from the city, though. It would be a drive to go into Atlanta every day, but if it was only for occasional access you would be in good shape. Good luck.

fayetteville and peachtree city are nice on the southside, the area of grayson and monroe are nice east of atlanta but they are a distance and prob at least 1 hour drive but nice areas and peaceful. If you want to be in georgia but not have to be close to atlanta, jefferson is nice and so is athens it is not small but there are many "sub" communities and over all the whole city is quite charming, in this same area madison is a wonderful town

It depends on the money situation. There is a community called Hamilton mill that is about 45 mins from Atlanta and it has a golf course (awesome at that), tennis, swimming (2 pools), beach volleyball, etc...the houses are from about $300,000+ on up. It's in Dacula, GA. It's really nice here.
