I have never had an infection or known anyone to. I have a bunch of tattoos and they all healed great.....except one. We were experimenting with difffernt creams to put on them to heal and Carmex lip balm was one of them. Needless to say, my skin did NOT like that at all!
The tattoo place would have to be nasty or doing things wrong for you to get an infection. Unless the person just didn't take care of their tattoo. Infection is very rare if things are done right!

Well I got a big one about two months ago that took well over four weeks to heal. I developed contact dermatitus on it. It became red and angry. It itched like hell and anything I put on it made it worse and impossible to deal with. I couldn't do anything. Sometimes I think an infection would have been better. I finally went to the doctor when it made me stay up all night and he gave me two kinds of steroids and some kind of anti-itch pill. It still took another week but I was really glad when it went away. No more big tattoos for me.

not me. for some reason some people are not being told to use bacitracin for 3-5 days to make sure that does not happen. you have thousands of holes in you, thousands of entry points for infection. they need to seal b4 you strat applying lotions.
below is a perfect example of how to take care of your tat
Fresh Tattoo
Take bandage off in 2 hours
Wash tattoo carefully with warm soapy water
DO NOT SCRUB
Lightly pat the tattoo until dry…
DO NOT RUB
Apply a very thin coat of bacitracin or aquaphor ointment 3 times a day for 3 to 5 days
Although re-bandaging a tattoo is not recommended, if covering the tattoo is necessary a sterile bandage or dressing should be used.
Be sure and wash the tattoo every night and morning…
DO NOT SOAK
Avoid tattoo exposure to direct sunlight and refrain from swimming in fresh, salt or chlorinated water for at least 2 weeks.
After External Healing
Tattoos heal quickly BUT fading can still be a problem
Apply hand lotion once a day until dryness stops
Vaseline Intensive Care, Lubriderm, Nivea, etc...
Tanning fades tattoos
Always cover fully healed tattoo with sun block
DO NOT RUIN YOUR INVESTMENT!!!

Head to a physician. In the intervening time, clutch just a little bacatracin (now not certain on that spelling). It's like neosporin, however with out all of the extraneous fluff. You can be helped through saline answer (get non-iodized sea salt and blend it with hot water. observe liberally four to five occasions an afternoon.)

my friend had that happen she had a reaction to one of the colors in her tat and her body rejected it . she still has the tattoo but now its missing parts of the color, they said it was an allergic reaction to the pigment (the color was pink to be exact) but on the other hand i have had my tattoo for over 2 years and have never had a problem we got them done at the same time same place but she had a reaction to the color & i didn't
PS dont listen to the guy above thats some of the worst things you can do to a tat if you wash it you can over mostin the scab and cause it to fall off to soon wich will take the color away keep it mosit but not wet and keep the scab on for as long as possible any tattoo artist will tell you.

It can happen but not if your smart. Go to a good clean tattoo shop, make sure they use unopened stearalized needles and the clean their gear before and after every tattoo they do. and do your best to keep the tattoo clean, and keep lotion on it
