There are a number of places close to Atlanta. Some would say you can actually swim in the Chattahoochee River. I did years ago as a kid... would not recomend it now in the Metro area. If you get north of the city, it is fine though. There is actually still rafting on it.

There is Lake Lanier, which is a very popular and swimable lake. It is north of Atlanta 45 minutes at its closest. Lake Lanier Islands is a water park on the lake that has a beach as well. There are also public marinas that you could take a boat out and swim from.

Lake Allatoona is north of Atlanta as well. It is about 40 minutes at its closest. I do not know a lot about it, but it is swimable and there has to be public areas. Of course, boat option is always available here as well.

Personally I would recomend going a bit further away. Those two lakes get very crowded in the late spring and summer. If you go to Lake Blue Ridge (about 2 hours away) it will be a bit more quiet and safe. Same goes for Lake Burton and any other one a but further outside of the city. Wikipedia link below is a good reference for more info.

Try Lake Lanier. It is in north atlanta and it is very nice. It is more like a country club/golf resort; but people actually live on the lake as well.

no answers yet this is a start anyway. lived around there as a kid 35yrs ago. Camping trips to a Lake Altoona? Probably some kind of retirement village there now, lake full of geriatric diapers. So, good for me, probably not so good for you.
