I was looking up a flight I was interested in 4 months from now. I went directly to United's website and saw that there were only 3 seats left on that flight! 4 months in advance! I usually buy through a travel agent, however, and I wondered if these unavailable seats were because travel agents purchased them ahead of time.

Typically no they do not. Vendors sometimes will have "blocked" space, but this depends on the dates, destination, airline, etc.

As far as 4 months in advance and only 3 seats it is entirely possible. I don't know the details of what you are looking at, but if you are looking at a popular destination or if there is an event of some sort going on then it can account for the limited space.

If you need to say go the dates you are looking at, don't wait or you might not be able to go. As far as if there are vendors with blocked space it wouldn't be blocked space for Air Only, it would be based of doing a package. Again, I don't know your details to answer better.

Good Luck to you.

For the most part, travel agents do not purchase blocks of airline seats but they work with the vendors to book travel for their clients. Air Consolidator companies do however purchase blocks of airline tickets to sell to travel agents for their clients.
It is very possible that all of the seats on that flight are booked except for 3 seats. As a rule of thumb, I always tell my clients to book their travel as far in advance as possible. This gives them the flexibiltiy to book the flight they want and for the times and dates that they want.
Hope this helped

Travel agents normally don't pre-purchase tickets, they are brokers, selling for there vendors when the customer is ready to buy. The site I use always give me a wide choice of avalibility when I book in advance. Go to www.ytb.com/awitravel Click on Book Travel to research

99% of the time travel agents purchase from the same availability that you can find on your own however there are tour operators like Walt Disney Travel Company that purchase blocks of seats to sell at a negotiated rate.
