I bought a steak from the supermarket that came in one of those trays which are meant to be sealed with plastic. I just discovered that the seal was broken and the steak has been exposed to air for about 3 days. It is now 1 or 2 days away from its use by date.

The steak appears to have no unusual colour, nor does it have any unusual smell.

Will it be safe to eat, how can i tell?

And if it is still worth eating it, what is the safest way to cook it?

Also, the fridge is a cool, appropriate temperature.

The steak is safe to eat. Thanks for providing details about the fridge being at an appropriate temp and the steak not looking or smelling funny. Those would have all been questions I would have had to ask.
Usually when steak is exposed to the air it will begin to turn colors, but as long as it's kept cold, it's still good. Some restaurants that are known for their steaks will serve "aged" steaks. An aged steak is one that is left in the fridge uncovered for a few days. The fridge is monitored to make sure it's cool enough and any discoloration can be cut off before cooking.
So, as far as how to cook it...on the grill is always the best way to cook a steak. If that's not an option then heat a frying pan nice and hot put the steak in it to sear the outside then turn the heat down and let it cook until it's done the way you like it. Salt, pepper and garlic on the outside is good and if you have any mushrooms, slice and saute' for on top.
OK, now I'm hungry!

The steak is safe to eat. In fact there is a method for dry-aging steaks at home that includes leaving it unwrapped in the refrigerator.

Absolutely okay! It has been refrigerated. If it's a bit dry marinate it. And Grill it!

If it smells and looks fine, it is o.k. to eat. You can cook it as you would normally.
