Aspirin thins the blood so no clots form which causes a heart attack or stroke, you need to discuss this with your Dr, as the other meds which thin your blood are prescription only and will only be prescribed if you are in a high risk of having an mi or stroke, these could be family history, angina, over weight, smoker, other meds are wafrin and heparin

Aspirin acts as a blood thinner; it works to prevent clots (thrombus formations) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes that affect the production of thromboxanes, chemicals leading to clots. These drugs, such as ibuprofen (Motrin) also work to stop inflammation and are consequently pain relievers. Yet, as you mentioned, these drugs do sometimes cause gastrointestinal problems.

Other anticoagulants include heparin, warfarin, and perhaps the most widely used today, clopidogrel, sold under the pharmaceutical name Plavix.

However, it would be wise to speak with your physician prior to taking any medicines. But remember that it is always more valuable to take care of your body by watching fat and cholesterol levels, getting routine exercise, and having a well-balanced diet. Medicines can only do so much, and even then with side effects.

You need something that will thin the blood. Presumably, red wine or red grape juice contain something that naturally lowers blood pressure; I vaguely recall having read that tomatoes MAY have some benefit there too. At least give those two a shot. A glass of each a day won't hurt you although the degree to which it thins your blood is hard to compare to aspirin.

There is a plant based product that is a derivative of the perewinkle plant that many european countries have used for years. This product is available in most vitamin and nutritional supplement stores and goes by the name of Vinpocetine. It's mechanism of action is to dilate the blood vessels increasing cerebral and cardio blood flow.In fact it has been used in other countries for some time as complimentary treatment to improve brain function in the elderly, suffering from alzheimers also has been used in patients imediately after suffering a stroke reducing brain damage as much as 25%.. There are many remarkable benefits and uses for Vinpocetine!.......But remember to always discuss even OTC remedies with your physician first and foremost!

I'm not too sure if you would want to try this, but a Garlic pill once a day, is really good for your heart and blood flow. You don't need a prescription for it so you could just go to your local pharmacy or nearest Wal-Mart Super-center and purchase it.

Talk to your physician about the risks and benefits of taking Vitamin E (over-the-counter), or Plavix or Coumadin (prescription). You may not need any of these.
