Uh, I guess marriage is sort of a prison so this makes sense.

I think the bride puts the chain on the grooms ankle, and then the mother of the bride attaches the 50 pound ball.

In the early 16th century, men used to have to prove that they consumated their marriages. In order to do that, they would have their wife lift up her skirt and bend over so the other men could check. If the man was satisfied that she was deflowered he would pour honey down her crack, so the next person that wanted to check could just stick their finger down there and see if it tasted like honey. Hence the word HONEYMOON.

Its not a chain, its called a Lazo. And they are usually two people, preferably a married couple. They are called Padrinos de Lazo. Its a very nice tradition.

It's not a chain, it's a rosery. They are the padrinos de Lazo.
