I've never played Texas Hold Em at a real casino before, only with friends and business associates. I'm familiar with the rules of the game.
My question is this: When I go to the poker room at a casino, can I just join any game that has an open seat? I walked into the poker room the last time I was at the Goldstrike in Tunica, Ms, and it looked pretty intimidating but I really want to play this game. I just didn't know how to get started. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks Stockoslayer. I saw the guy standing up at the table, I didn't know what that was. The way the poker room is set up at the casino I like to frequent it is in the opposite side of the room from when you walk in. But thanks, now I know! I'm excited, I'll probably play tomorrow night.

I just wanted to say thanks to you all. I love the casino, as most of you can probably relate with. Now I plan to get started on one of the best games ever. Thank you all.

It's not really that bad. I mean, be prepared--the first time you sit down at a real table in a casino, you're probably going to be a little shaky and nervous, but everyone is during their first time, so don't worry about that.
There'll be a table at the front of the poker room where you'll give someone your name and you'll tell them what kind of game you want to play, and they'll seat you. You probably want to play at low limits initially. There are a couple of other etiquette things that you'll need to figure out, but those are usually more specific to the rules at a certain casino. My advice--be honest. Tell the dealer (and the table) it's your first time playing in a casino, and they'll help you with blinds and antes and etiquette and things like that. Don't try to play Mr. Vegas High Roller...you don't want to be playing at high-enough limits on your first trip to even get close to something like that. Just take the first time as a learning experience and use it to be prepared for next time.

Most of poker rooms in casino these days are full. It could be intimidating as u walk into poker room and see all sorts of people spread out in hundred tables. Look for area that plays type of game(hold'em limit, hold'em NL, omaha, stud... ets) u want to play. Near by they should have board for waiting list. Get your name on waiting list and when they call u, they'll direct u to table. If u get lost or confuse, simply ask "floor person"(usually wear suit and name tag on thire chest) Good Luck with your game.

Yeah you ran into a spin off hold em game. They are like black jack and you play against the dealer. but they have some wierd rules to favor the casinos edge. At the casino around here it is bonus holdem. Just ask where the poker room is. Good luck

No. There is a registration table near the front of the room where a host puts you on the list. When it is your turn, they will tell you over the loudspeaker, or just yell it out. If there is a table open, the host will just tell you which table to go to.
It is a lot of fun. I highly recommend the Bellagio or Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. Don't be intimidated, but watch out for the locals, and the pros. Their modus operandi is to wait for a killer hand before they sink any money into the pot.

There is usually a person in the poker room with some sort of sign-in sheet. You just give them your name and tell them what game and what limit you want to play and they will call you when a seat is available.

Every day there are newcomers in the card room, like yourself. Everyone feels intimidated at first.
There will be a signup desk for the different games. Ask the person what limits they have and then get your name on that list(s). When you do get your seat, tell them how many chips you want to buy and they will get them for you.
after you have won and feel that you have won enough, give them the chips to cash out.(just make sure you don;t give your rack to a passerby). Good luck and may your future be full of many aces.
