it depends on what codec was used to encode the avi file. There are multiple codecs out there. You can download some called the "k++ codec pack" that has just about every codec you can think of, and it's free.

My personal favourite is available from the following link www.videolan.org download and install it and you will find it plays just about every video or audio file. I have had it for six months and it's played everything I have thrown at it. Hope this helps.
