there was a question here earlier and it was taken off before very many could respond. I want PEOPLE THAT KNOWAND DON'T MIND SHARING to tell others what it's truly like to wear one. I would have been glad too but never got the chance. Mine was no wonderful story in fact I would have committed suicide-In which I don't believe in- but the torture was so bad for me I would have done it , if I would have still had to wear one. I know what it's like and it's not easy and it's not fun and games. Everyday was a battle for me. What about somebody else. Are you Brave enough to let others who think it's a breeze know what it is like.So they can be more Thankful for never having the experience.I'm glad to be alive, but it was Hell for me!!

ACCTUALLY my grandma whos 72 has had one for 18 years because she almost died. She hated it at first and was so depressed but then she realized it saved her life and she wouldnt have it any other way. she thinks of it now as a miracle. I have seen her change it and everything and it looks terrible to do but it really did save her life so now she puts her embarassment and frusturation aside and thanks God every day for keeping her alive with it. Good luck to all those of you who do have one!

I have an ileostomy and have had it for 31 years since I was 10 years old due to Ulcerative Colitis. I don't mind it at all. In fact, if given the opportunity to reverse it, I really don't think I would. My ostomy doesn't stop me from doing anything I want - I've ridden elephants and camels, flown around the world, swim regularly every summer, etc without a problem.

I will say that ostomy surgery is 30% physical and 70% mental - it's that body image thing that usually gets to people. Once you realise that you're still you, no matter how you poop, then you're on your way to acceptance. Just like some people wear glasses to correct eye problems, others wear a bag to correct bowel problems - and our advantage is that no one has to know unless we tell them :)

Maybe this isn't quite suited for a psychology question, and that's why it was taken off?? Just a thought.

I knew a girl who had to wear one in middle school, and she HATED it. She felt like she smelled all the time, and the whole idea sickened her. None of us knew exactly what she was going through, and we never thought she smelled bad as a result.

In my opinion, I think the bearer of the burden thinks it affects those around them more than it really does.
