+ The Pope +
John 21:15-17 states:
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Matthew 16:17-19 states:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

+ Papal Infallibility +
The Catholic Church teaches that the Pope is infallible at closely defined times.
The Pope is only infallible when he, in union with the body of bishops, solemnly teaches that a doctrine as true.
This comes from the words of Jesus to Peter (the first Pope) and the Apostles (the first bishops), "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 18:18) and "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16).
At all other times the Pope can be just as wrong or sinful as you and me and be in need of forgiveness.

No one is sinless. Even the Pope goes to Confession. God has a strange way of picking imperfect people to work for God. Remember the first Pope, Peter? He denied Jesus 3 times but Jesus still made him the first Pope.
The Pope is not an idol nor has ever claimed to be. He has a difficult job to do in a more difficult world. Give the man a chance.

Not sure what you are getting at. No one, including Roman Catholics, says that the Pope is sinless.
Maybe you are thinking of the Doctrine of Infallibility? This is widely misunderstood, even among Catholics. The Doctrine of Infallibility is a fancy way of saying that the Pope has unilateral authority to set church doctrine. In reality the Pope would never do this without first consulting the Bishops and Cardinals. For example, the Pope has sole authority to state that the Catholic Church considers abortion a sin.

Parv, the Pope is not to be worshiped, only respected as a leader. His infallibility refers to the dogma that the Pope has the final say. He is human just like everyone else. He even likes orange soda and spaghetti. He is no more an idol than Karl Marx et al is to the atheists.

The Pope is just a man, like anyone else. Some look at him as the head of the Church. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church.

Sigh...the Pope has never said he is sinless. No one thinks he is either.
Please do a little research before you open your mouth.

Oh, here go the Christians, picking on someone who doesn't speak English very well. At least he/she is trying. Pick on someone your own size.
The entire christian shebang is a false idol as far as I'm concerned. I'm only surprised so many people have been tricked into believing in this sham.

I think he's a great guy. I know people who met him personally, and they like him. I know people who met the last pope, and he was a great guy.
