Kansas City:
Smells/food: BBQ, both smokehouses and KCMasterpiece style.
Sounds: Jazz downtown
Albuquerque: smells: Chiles roasting in the fall.
Food: New Nexican food. Breakfast burritos.
Sounds: the sound of propane burners lighting up hot air balloons (and firing up chile roasters).

The smells of City market on Saturdays. The smell of ripe produce, Cascones breakfast, walking into Carollos with the Italian scents, and the BBQ restaurant on the corner. Every time I go there, it reminds me of the many Saturdays I spent there growing up.

Two general food groups I associate with KC - BBQ and Mexican. You can always smell the BBQ all over the city. If you like Mexican food and can't find something you like along Southwest Blvd, you have very picky taste buds.
Rosedale's and Sol Azteca are my favorites for each category (they are actually next-door neighbors!)

When it comes to KC I'll always associate it with two things. 1. The flop house hotel the military put us up in while awaiting our induction physicals. Eight of us in one room betting on the cockroach races. 2. When I was driving thru in '64 and had to stop and back up to be sure of what I saw. A man sitting behind a gas station with a pan and paint roller, painting a '55 Chevy bright yellow. Of course I'll have to admit that the best steak I ever ate was in KC also.

If I had to think "Kansas City" I think Bar-b-Que. So I think smoked ribs and beef brisket. Lots of smokey/woody smells mixed in with spices from bar-b-que dry rubs and sauces. Yummy - I am getting hungry:)
