Whichever animals came to the ark, Noah took two of each - male and female - and 7 paris of 'tahor' ritually clean animals onto the ark. The pigs came...thus got their free passage.

Because he was specifically told to include "unclean" animals such as the pig. He was to take two of each unclean, and seven pairs of each clean, domestic, animal. So he did as he was told by God.

A better question might be why God wanted the pigs on the ark...
