I think that's a large-scale reflection of standard human behavior. It's easy to forget God when things are good, and easy to remember Him when we need help.

We are ALL hypocritical - at convenient times, especially. Have you ever been acquainted with a person whose dear relative has fallen ill and has a probability of dying?
I have done this as well . .
(I first wonder if I should fall on my knees and appeal to the "creator" to forgive me and listen to my prayers, then wonder if I could just pray while sitting, NOT kneeling - then I pray like the dickens for the welfare of the beloved who is not well - then I teeter-totter between the thought that "god" has heard me and will intervene by allowing the ill person to get well and live - and the thought that I AM DESPERATE and am appealing to NOTHING except my own preferred results to the situation.)
At this point I throw the business of prayer to
"Whatever Happens is really OUT of my Hands - and just wait, with the only positive alternative being : to Hope things turn out for the best.
If they do, I quickly set prayer aside and go on with my life.
If they don't - I'll do the same thing : set prayer aside and think to be more practical the next time a similar situation happens.
Which is : if IT is out of your hands, IT IS out of your hands.
So, I tell myself, Don't seek "God" to help, when the next moment you've xed him out of your credulity.
It is SOOO HUMAN to become a hypocrite about anything, especially if in a pinch of a situation.
No one is exempted from this.
Don't fool yourself.

Yeah, I noticed right after 9/11, the churches esspecially in New York City were jam-packed, standing room only. That didn't take long to wear off, did it??
One thing is true: The second someone gets their peepee stuck in a door, its "Oh God help me".

Most politicians just use god's name at times when they think it will win votes or bump them up in public opinion... It's also a way they try to comfort people who are scared... Tell them to pray, cause we're not giving them any money to fix the problem!

Huh? Are you talking about the same government in which almost no open atheist serves, and it was big news when a congressman came out about not believing in God at all? The one in which our president is constantly God-talking? That one?

Look whith whom you are dealing. They will say what ever is going to look good at the time, but the constitution does say there should be a separation. You have to be a hypocrit to be in politics.

Religion is the opiate of the masses. Sometimes you gotta calm the people down, sometimes you need them to clean up and get to work.

No, not ironic or hypocritical... it is very telling of the nature of religious belief. It's only good when you have no rational option.
