I found an item called a PetPocket at Furlongspetsupply.com which may be helpful. Of course cats just seem to need to be the center of attention. I can't read a book without my cat sitting on top of it!

I have 6 cats and if one has to sit on my lap they all come running. So now I use my laptop on the couch and they all have a place to be closes to me. I don't know what I would do without piskey kids.

I would just try to gently teach your cat to curl up on your lap quietly while you're at the computer. THat way you could pet him when you want, but have both hands free when you want.
