It depends on how much Truth is in the religious group. If there is a lot of Truth, the more they get demonized in the press, and then the more people feel free to slander them in forums such as this.

Part of this comes from only seeing the actions of the few. Another part comes from the remainder of the group doing little to nothing to separate out the extreme few from the much more accepting many. Finally, some people are so closed minded that if you do not agree with them, you must be wrong.
The best way to deal with those who must degrade a faith not their own is to educate them about what things really are. Not many will be willing to change, but you may help counter the worst by shutting them up for a moment.

It is very hard and time consuming to point out individuals within any one group that we see doing something bad or distasteful. There are, after all, so many of them/us. Therefore .... we just lump the offenders into that group that they claim to belong to and it sounds like we're "hating" the complete group.
Lets remember that "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" runs both ways. The noisy terrorist gets the publicity for his or her club, right? Even when the club did not really send him or her.
That is a wrong way to do it. It is a bit like the team being put in the penalty box (hockey) for the foul of the one player. Still, in American Football, they do penalize the team for each infraction done on the field. Hummm ...... hard to say.

Is it really such a small part?
Does the good outweigh the bad?
What happens when one of the few "Bad ones " gets access to WMD's?
History has shown that religion , due to its vagueness can be interpreted in near infinite ways and has been done so many times. Often these interpretations have lead to great destruction and suffering.
In my opinion almost all religious mentalities are unhealthy in the grand scheme of things, yet society looks the other way as it is taught to children in the form of Truth , instead of Faith.

I'd say it's because they're the only ones who people actually see. If the rest of the religious group were more outspoken about their beliefs and why they follow them, we probably wouldn't have this problem. Instead, the sensible of the group want to take the command "don't broadcast yourself" too far and keep it a virtual secret, known only to their fellow believers.
That's my guess anyway.

People do this for a lot of reasons but one good one is that the members of the group don't disown or chastise the bad actions of a few. That makes it look like they agree with the bad apples.

Unfortunately it's often the small part of the group getting the most press. Or they're the ones who are most vocal and out there.

Some people aren't happy unless they are degrading someone or something, as a whole or in parts.

If it's only a small part, what is the bigger part doing about it?
Why do they sit idly by while the far right controls politicians?
Why don't they speak out against teaching religion in school?
Why don't they speak out when they want "god" in the pledge of allegiance?
Why don't they speak out against "in god we trust" on money?
etc
etc
etc
