You've joined the ranks of countless others believing what unsubstantiated and questionable sources write. Why don't you go to the credible source for better answers--such as lds.org?
If you have not read the history behind Joseph Smith's acceptance as a prophet of God then there is little reason to suspect you'll learn the truth. Consider reading the Book of Mormon and what Joseph Smith had recorded about his early life that is found in the book's preface.
By then you may have a stronger grasp of the information to which you want to know.

If you'd like to look at this practice from a non-theological slant, take a look at the times. Many men had gone off to war, (and died, subsequently) therefore leaving an overabundance of women. Also, during this time women could not own land, or pretty much anything else. It was a law of practicality as much as a law of theology. God is probably the most practical person I know.

You guys are idiots....maybe you should do some research or actually ask a mormon what mormonism is instead of assume you know...
My best friend is mormon...and there are only a few differences from Catholicism. They have sacrament every sunday, baptise(however you spell it) only after 8 years old, have a living prophet.
Those are the reasons they are discriminated against by other Christains...
Maybe you guys should so some real research every once in while..not that it matters anyway...since you think you know the secrets of the universe....

He thought he was special. In my opinion, he wanted to be able to have more women. The only way he could to that is have a revelation from God that he should start polygamy. Otherwise his followers would think he was a real jerk for cheating on his wife and not follow him. He was a scoundrel.

We don't know why the lord allows for it times, and other times condemns it. If you look in the Old Testament Abraham and Jacob were considered blessed in their plural marriages, while Soloman was considered cursed for it.
But I can say something of the unique timing for the short while when polygamy was allowed in the LDS church. At this time, the Mormon people were being severly persecuted (tarred and feathered, raped, hung, shot - the governor of Missouri made it perfectly legal to kill a Mormon) and then they crossed the great planes to Utah. There was no pioneer trail for them to follow, they MADE the pioneer trail west - every morning they'd get up and dig graves for those who died in the night.
Needless to say, lots of men died. Lots of women were left as widows, and at the time national laws were such that women could not own property, or even earn a decent wage - at least this way the women were taken care of.
The world is different now, women can care for themselves, the LDS people aren't being hunted or walking accross a country. It makes perfect sense that at this time polygamy is condemned by the church and leads to excommunication.

Plural marriage back then was so that women would be assured that they would be able to get into the Celestial Kingdom. If they had other husbands, their husbands were probably either non-members, or not good members. Later, it was also to "build up seed to God".

They only married women that were not married or their husbands had been killed. They did this to protect the women & children from the elements of the time ie: weather, indians, etc...

For the same reason most other male icons or figures in religion had many wives: because organized religion is MAN MADE.
And I'm not a Mormon.

I am not a Mormons, but I have relatives who are. It was Smith's successor, Brigham Young who had all the wives. Why? Over-sexed?
