Go through the advertisements of leading software companies calling for soft ware personnel. The advertisements appear in all leading English news papers
List out the skill sets called for. There are a number of specialisations. Chose the one in high demand as you can enlist from the advertisements and pursue the studies if it suits to your aptitude.
This exercise will give a hands on experience though requires some efforts on your part.

define "immensely successful"...
if you prefer to sit in front of a computer 15 hours a day, get back and eye problems but get a good paycheck and call that immensely successful then it's easy
get some experience in the industry and then do something different...

You may get a good job or "not so good job". You have to accept all kinds to start with. Many a software engineers are hired and fired. After that they dont accept jobs which pay less then what they were receiving before and are seen loitering around without jobs.
