Discovery Toys are great many of there products are used in early childhood classrooms. They are durable and you can return toys that break. Also, your house is a great discovery place. My sons have ample toys, but they prefer playing with stuff in my house, and beleive it or not they learn alot. My son like to try and put covers on storage containers, he would stack them as well. At that age a favorite activity was to play with wooden spoons and trying to open jars and bottles. He also loved keys. The one thing he has loved always is books. At 23 months he just loves to look at the pictures and identify all the pictures he knows. Toys, with a cause and effect are always a hit.

Very little, A child's emotional development comes from the other humans that are raising/teaching it. U could almost say the same for their social development. Dolls and animal puppets are the most likely toys to have anything with emotions or socialization. Most kids have too many store bought commercial toys. I gave my kids more art supplies and real life things to play with like pots and pans, real tools like hammer and nails. (age appropriate of course) They also got to play in the kitchen a lot and help cook real food and play with real dough -- not that funky wall paper paste play dough with it's funky smell.

We got a pack of sign language flash cards. Although we didnt do much of the signs, we had fun with the words. Also all kids love that Playskool toy where the ball pops up and goes down a spiral. Then they can put the ball in tubes too I think.
