I don't know if you're old enough to remember the starving children in Ethiopia back in the '80's. We all got together at my place of employment and took up collections of food, money, and medical supplies. It was all sent to Ethiopia. Months later there were reports all over the news of how many of these supplies had been found in airport hangars where they had been left to rot while more children died from starvation and disease.
Why do you use Africa as an example? Do you realize there are starving children right here in America? And in Mexico? And just about any other place you'd care to mention.
I don't know about any one else, but I would prefer to make my donations to the local churches and food banks where I know the intended recipients will actually benefit.
As far as my dogs go, there are also shelters and pounds FULL of starving dogs and cats. The five I have are what I have chosen to do to try to help their situation. I am more horrified by what happens to dogs in puppy mills than by starving people. The people have something the dogs don't have. Free choice. And lots of government agencies and bleeding hearts who ask questions like these on Yahoo!

Why does the American Government spend more on it's natinal defense and invading countries than it does on it's own social programs?
That is what you should be asking not what people who work hard every day are doing with their personal income. I resent being called inhumane because I feed and take care of a dog. I do volunteer work in my community and take care of my neighbours when they need help.

So how much do you donate to charities a year? Do you tiff 10 % of your paycheck to your church? The world understands the plight of children, but do you? I am comfortable with what I do for the good of humanity while I am on this earth. What I give and what I receive in return I am fine with. And if I want to keep and feed 100 dogs in my home and can still give back to humanity, then so be it. I wake up every morning with a smile because I know the day prior I did a good deed for the world I live in.

First point, why feed a starving child/person in Africa when so many at home are in the same condition? Second, pets lower blood pressure, increase endorphins, and both lengthen and improve the quality of life for many. Third, while I agree that something should be done about the starving/homeless, I do not think it needs to be done at the expense of any other living thing.

how about we have a compromise then. there is nothing wrong in adopting and taking care of a dog or another kind of pet. it teaches your children (if you have any) about responsibility and they become a part of the family. dogs especially have been known to rescue their owners out of loyalty and compassion. one way to help feed those starving African children is by donating money to them. And one other thing, the media and journalism most of the time twist the truth in their reports. Africa is industrialized and many of its citizens are independent with shelter, employment, food and housing. Not all of its citizens are naked, crying and hiding behind a bush as maggots eat upon their flesh.

What are you doing to help these children? Do you donate most of your income to help them?
Do you go out to eat at restruarants? What kind of car do you drive, what brand of clothes do you wear? How much a month do you spend on entertainment? Are you living with only the essentials? If not, then you should keep your judgements to yourself.
I guarentee you spend money on things that other people might consider a waste. So you shouldn't judge other people. We all work hard for our money and have the right to spend it however we like.
I have 2 kids and 2 dogs. All of whom I work hard to support. If I could not support them, I wouldn't have had them.

I find it interesting that you assume that the value of a dog is not the same value as a person. To many pet owners (such as those who can't have children, gay men who don't have partners or can't adopt, lesbian women who choose not to conceive) these dogs are their family- their children! People don't realize the value a dog can bring to a life. A great example- a10 year old child lost in the mountains with her dog- many psycologists and doctors believe the only reason this child survived as many days as she did was because she had her dog there with her for warmth, and for something or someone to keep living for!

Now, you also automatically assume that those of us that have dogs don't contribute to the care of those starving or homeless people. When was the last time you saw a starving vet on the street corner and invited him to lunch with you? For me- it was just Tuesday. When was the last time you donated your Saturday at the food bank? . I also donate regularly to homeward bound, and teen safe houses.

It's close minded people like you that are the reason we have 22,000 dogs donated to shelters and pounds everyday! More than half of those will never find a home instead they are put to sleep. One more light dimmed because someone didn't care about them.

So go ahead, get on your soap box, I will just knock you right off of it.

You are wrong. People who take care of there pets are more likely to give money for the care of others. God says we arethe care takers of the earth its gardens and its animals. There are so many animals out there and we humans have incroached upon there dwelling places. If we do not incorperate the animal into our lives we will be over run with other problems we will have to deal with.
People are starving in other places its true...but we as the United states can not do it all. There needs to be other countries there to help also. Our U.S. has starving people--homeless people our own goverment ignores so as to help other countries. Everyone everywhere needs to do there part.

Although I do believe ( even if this sounds bad ) that all these animals in shelters that dont find homes should be processed and sent to other countries for food. Dont YAK..
The only reason we dont eat dog , cat or rat is we did not grow up doing so.If we had done it from the beginning we would think nothing of it and if we were starving we WOULD do it. Its a waste for us to kill off all the animals we cant find homes for and bury them in the ground when they can be used for food in other countries.
I help people when I can , in my own back yard and I also have animals I care a lot about but that does not make me less a person in Gods eyes.
All animals equel out the enviroment in one way or another. They all have a job on this earth and if we did not have them it might get pretty nasty here on earth.
Just because you dont care about animals is no reason to judge others who do.
I care for all living things and everyone else should also.It just makes the world a better place all the way around.

Nice spelling.

Regardless of that...do you know how many starving people you can feed in Africa by selling your computer and donating the money you usually spend on Internet access to Save the children?
