my boyfriend used to be a pretty big partier, before we got together he used to do weed and drink alot! but since weve been together hes laid off alot for me. weve been together 9 months and i love him with my whole heart, i just lost a grandfather to smoking and recently my boyfriend has been smoking cigarettes alot, i used to do some light smoking but i quit for my grandpa, he asked us all to not do it before he died and my boyfriend told him he wouldnt but he still does, he promises me that he's going to quit but i dont see it happening, i really worry about his health, he says it gets hard to breath when mowing already and were only 16. it cant be good for him to already be like that, i want to tell him to quit but i dont want to seem like a controlling girlfriend, so how do i tell him?!

I can completely relate to your situation. I also have been in the same situation. My problem was that I made it "Ok" from the beginning. So being that I did that, it was hard to put my foot down and say that I wasn't going to tolerate his habits. So the best advice I can say to you is REALLY tell him how you feel...but know that you can't control what he does. If it is that important that you can't see yourself with a smoker, then you can decide to end it. But if you're willing to accept it, see if there can be a compromise. Maybe as long as you two are together he can hold off on smoking or not smoke as much. But when he's not with you...he can do whatever he wants. You can say that the smoke actually bothers you.

First of all, he's legally too young to smoke cigarettes, but we've all gotten our hands on that stuff at one point or another in our lives when we were teens! Secondly, try talking to his parents and voice your concerns w/ them. If he's already short of breath at the age of 16 from smoking, there could be an underlying health issue that needs to be diagnosed. In speaking w/ his parents, maybe they can get him into the doctor to see about getting him a physical to make sure he's healthy.

None of those things (weed, alcohol, cigarettes, etc.) are healthy for anyone to consume and espcially at such a young age! You guys aren't finished growing and his smoking may lead to stunted growth amongst other serious health issues. Talk to a guidance counselor at school to see if there's any classes that you and your b/f can attend together and you can quit together. Make it a group thing and invite other friends that you may know that smoke to attend an educational class about the repercussions of smoking.

Cigarettes are made up of over 100 toxins and I believe there's websites that could tell you how much there are specifically as well as what they are. Arsenic is one of them and so is chromium. Yes, both are killers when entered into the bloodstream! Hopefully w/ the support of friends and family and other authoritative figures, you can at least inform you b/f of the harms of smoking. My aunt died of lung cancer and never smoked a day in her life, but her husband did! Her doctor's thought that the 2nd hand smoke was a contributing factor in her illness! I ended up having to attend her funeral the same day of my jr. prom! That was loads of fun! (Totally being sarcastic.) Good luck!

just tell him how you feel, but honeslty you can't make a person quit unless he wants to. I smoke and the more people tell me to stop, I do it more. and I have been smoking a long time, and it is hard to quit. but your boyfriend is 16 it should be a little easier to quit if he really wants to.

support him without telling him what to do. he quit the drugs and partying-so give him a minute. tell him that you care for him and want the best. ask him if there is something that you can do for him to help him quit.
