The gene for baldness mostly manifests itself in males, but it can only be passed to offspring on the X chromosome. For men, that X chromosome is constributed by the mother. And so, baldness is hereditary, but the gene for baldness is passed to you by your mother.

So, if you want to know whether the gene for male pattern baldness is in your family, you have to look at the men in your mother's family. Since your mother's father is bald, that means that the gene is present in her family and you could possibly inherit that gene.

But, there are variances in human genetics, and your mother may not have passed that gene on to you. In my family, some of the men have lost their hair, and others still have a full head of hair. It varies with each individual.
