I know someone who had a very abusive childhood, joined the Navy to escape all of that and found that he was really depressed while in Basic, regretting so much that he had enlisted. But that didn't stop the Navy from keeping him over THREE times, extending his basic training until they could "break him" and start fresh.

He hated it. They even thought he might kill himself at one point. They determined that if they let him go, he most likely would kill himself, perhaps because the sense of failure would have been just enough to tip him completely over the edge.

That being said, they wouldn't let him go and he survived, did his four years, was a great sailor, now happily married and working on a degree with a wonderful future in banking.

If they let someone go from Basic, it's going to be for a pretty darn good reason. Once you sign those papers... YOU ARE GOVERNMENT PROPERTY.

I saw a lot of people get released from basic training, or boot camp these were the reasons.

1. Dirty drops, failed that drug test and they got sent packing.
2. Enlisted under false paperwork, most of this fell on the recruiters the guys wanted to be there and wanted to enlist but they failed the ASVAB, or were not able to enlist for other reasons.
3. Tried to hop the fence to the airport. Not the brightest thing to do, but it happened.
4. Death was another way to get out of bootcamp, and yes we did have a recruit die while I was going through training. Those PT runs were killer.

During my 4 years as an Air Force Military Training Instructor, I lost trainees due to pschychological reasons, physical reasons, and a simple failure to pass the curriculum. I saw two trainees in other flights commit suicide, and had one attempt in while I was on duty one night as the CQ (Charge of Quarters). I've seen trainees claim to be homosexual in order to get out; I've seen them eat shoe polish, chew napkins in the dining hall, intentionally wet the bed, all kinds of stupid stuff - most of which was recognized as a sham, and the trainees were kept in and completed training.

But the only time I've ever seen the Air Force pull a trainee out of Basic Training and give him the option to just pick up and go home was when one of my trainee's grandfather died. The old gentleman was the trainee's only living relative and had raised the trainee since his parents were killed in an auto accident when he was ten. The grandfather was EXTREMELY wealthy, and when he passed he left his entire fortune to his grandson - all 118 MILLIONS DOLLARS WORTH of it! The squadron commander called me and the trainee down to his office, where he, the First Sergeant, a Legal officer, and the Chaplain were waiting for us. As soon as I saw the sky pilot I knew what had happened, but the legal beagle was a mystery. After the commander told him the news - which the kid expected, since his grandfather was ill when he joined - the legal beagle stepped forward and informed him that in light of his recent inheritance, the Air Force was prepared to discharge him under Honorable circumstance; all he had to do was say yes.

Needless to say, he said yes. He was processed out of the Air Force and off the base in five days, the fastest I've ever seen that done!

I knew a girl that was sent home because she wouldn't eat enough.
I also had a friend that was in during the Gulf War. He said that he went to basic just as the US sent troops. As a head game they told these guys that they needed to pack up because they were being sent immediately. He said most people realized that it was a head game but that one guy actually curled up into the fetal position and started crying! He got sent home the next day for failure to adapt.

It happens everyday ! Some people aren't cut out for military life, or just can't hack it. Eventually, most of these people are sent home with a general discharge, under honorable conditions !

If I remember right there is actually a time frame that if you wanted to get out you could with a general discharge. I am thinking that it is the first 30 days or so. They ususally don't give you anything worse unless you did something criminal while still in.

There is another way is to fail the physical training test. I knew three people received trainee discharge program.

People wash out of basic all the time. Usually for psychiatric or psychological reasons. Sometimes because they go awol; sometimes because they steal, wet their beds, have incurable allergies, get injured, etc.,
